The person behind the pack
About Timothy M Logan
Founder, editor and resident trail-walker at Outdoor Letter.
Hi, I'm Timothy M Logan. Outdoor Letter is where I share what I've learned from walking in the hills — and what I'm still learning. It started as a notebook of routes, gear tweaks and hard lessons, and grew into a place for anyone who wants to spend more of their life on foot outdoors.
What you'll find here
- Hikes — route guides with practical detail: distances, seasons, logistics and what to expect.
- How-to & skills — planning, navigation, camp craft and technique for all kinds of terrain.
- Gear — a principles-first approach to what you carry, including gear lists and long-term notes.
- Health & safety — feet, water, food, altitude and weather: the unglamorous stuff that makes trips work.
- Musings — opinions, reflections and the occasional myth worth retiring.
How I approach it
I believe the best hiking advice is simple, honest and tested. You don't need the newest gear or the biggest mileage to have a meaningful time outside. You need a bit of preparation, a willingness to adapt, and respect for the places and people you walk among. Everything on this site is written with that in mind.
Pack a little less, look around a little more, and leave the trail better than you found it.
Independence
Outdoor Letter is independently written and edited. Some articles may contain affiliate links that help support the site; they never change what I recommend. You can read more in the advertising disclosure.
